Emma Sanders BBC Sport women’s football news reporter Last night was a really successful night for the English teams - Chelsea securing their automatic qualification spot in the quarter-finals, while Arsenal and Manchester United got a seeded place in the play-offs. The main advantage for Chelsea is that they don't face one of the big hitters - Barcelona and Lyon - until at least the semi-finals. They have lost to Barca in the last three semi-finals and in the 2020-21 final but did draw 1-1 with them in the league phase this year. That was a decent result for Chelsea and will give them confidence going into the knockout stages. They went unbeaten in the league phase and only Barcelona matched them for goals scored and goals conceded. The Champions League title has eluded Chelsea and manager Sonia Bompastor was brought in to deliver it. Can she do it this year? We already know that Chelsea will face one of Arsenal or Manchester United in the quarter-finals, provided both successfully navigate the play-off round. That's because teams in the knockout bracket are paired - Arsenal and United are paired together having finished fifth and sixth in the league phase respectively, while Chelsea and Bayern Munich are paired after third and fourth place finishes respectively. If both Arsenal and United win their play-off round ties, then one will face Chelsea in the last-eight and the other Bayern. The live stream of the draw is now under way and available for you to view at the top of this page. We're expecting the draw itself to get started shortly - but we've said that before. .. Both are seeded, meaning that the teams that finished higher up in the league phase table get to face teams that finished lower down in the league phase table. Finishing fifth and sixth respectively, Arsenal and Man Utd form a seeding pair who cannot be drawn against one another in the knockout phase play-offs. They will each play a team who finished 11th or 12th - Atletico Madrid or Leuven - for a chance to compete in the quarter-final. Chelsea, meanwhile, have already qualified for the quarter-final. The third-placed Chelsea are in a 'seeding pair' with Bayern Munich, who finished fourth in the league phase table. Each is to be assigned a 'side' of the knockout bracket in the quarter-final draw which will determine their path to the final. Leuven 0-3 Arsenal Arsenal Arsenal goalscorer Beth Mead, speaking to Disney Plus, said: "We know Leuven are a really hard team to break down so it's nice to get goals. We could've been a bit more clinical but happy to get the three goals. "You get a lot of touches on the ball and for me individually I love doing that so it was a nice game to be part of. "I was happy with my performance, happy to get the goal, played well and got the win. I know we have finished fifth so that has put us in a good position moving forwards. " Emma Sanders BBC Sport women’s football news reporter Defending champions Arsenal have not had it their way this season having already dropped off the WSL title race and finding it tricky in Europe. They got the job done though and sat a respectable fifth in the league phase table by the end of the six matches. That ensured they dodged a potential meeting with Manchester United and while having to navitage the play-offs is not ideal, Arsenal will fancy their chances against weaker opposition. England captain Leah Williamson's return from injury comes well in time for the knockout stages and will be a major boost. They have also won their past five matches in all competitions after a winless run of three games prior to that. Click 'Get Involved' to have your say Arsenal could go all the way, but it needs to start clicking. Arsenal haven't been at their best yet this season. If they start to click, they could win it again. Mick, Spilsby If you thought that a surprise defeat to Arsenal in last season's Champions League final would send Barcelona spiralling into an existential crisis, then you'd be wrong. The three-time European champions topped the league phase after winning five of their six games - the fly in the ointment was a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Only Chelsea matched Barca's 20 goals scored and three conceded. Barca began their campaign with a statement 7-1 thrashing of Bayern Munich, and their other wins were by at least a two-goal margin. Even with Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati and Spain midfielder Patri Guijarro sidelined with injury, nobody wants to come up against the likes of Claudia Pina, Alexia Putellas, Ewa Pajor and Vicky Lopez. We'll try that again. .. This Riddle post cannot be displayed in your browser. Please enable Javascript or try a different browser. This Riddle post cannot be displayed in your browser. Barcelona, Lyon and Chelsea finish in the top three having completed all six matches without defeat. Bayern Munich make up the top four while Arsenal and Manchester United finish fifth and sixth respectively and in doing so secure a seeded spot in the draw for the play-offs. Emma Sanders BBC Sport women’s football news reporter Given this is United's debut season in the main draw of the Women's Champions League, head coach Marc Skinner can be pleased with his side's progress. A 2-1 home win against Paris St-Germain and a 1-0 win at Juventus were the pick of the bunch as United grabbed four victories from their six matches. Their aim was always to finish inside the top 12 and to cap it off with a seeded spot in the play-offs was a strong finish to the league phase. However, their 3-0 defeat by Lyon in December showed the gap between United and Europe's elite, so greater challenges lie ahead. Skinner has called for action in the January transfer window, saying he must add squad depth if United want to keep competing in Europe. They avoided a potential meeting with Arsenal in the play-offs following Wednesday's victory in Turin and will face either Leuven or Atletico Madrid next. Skinner will hope key England internationals Jess Park and Ella Toone remain fit, while two-time champion Fridolina Rolfo - who has played in five finals with her former clubs Barcelona and Wolfsburg - can use her experience to guide them further. Juventus 0-1 Man Utd Manchester United secured a seeded spot in the draw for the Women's Champions League knockout phase play-offs with victory over Juventus. England international Jess Park scored the game's only goal, curling the ball into the far corner early in the first half at Allianz Arena in Turin. Marc Skinner's side, playing in the league phase for the first time, completed it with four wins from six matches. They can be pleased with that achievement - rounded off with a hard-earned victory in Italy against an in-form Juventus side. A strong first half put United in control and they were unfortunate not to extend their lead with efforts from Park and Melvine Malard deflected wide or saved. Juventus tried to capitalise on United's lack of squad depth in the second half as the visitors tired - but the best opportunity came via Amalie Vangsgaard early on. Striker Terland was also left wondering why she had not been awarded a penalty when she was brought down by Juventus captain Cecilia Salvai late on. Both sides miss out on automatic qualification for the quarter-finals, achieved by the top four of the 18 teams competing, but will go through to the two-legged play-off round. Lianne Sanderson Former England footballer on Disney+ I think Leah Williamson being back is a massive plus for them. Kim Little being back, you'll start to see Arsenal click into gear. They've not had a great start to the season but I believe in this team. I think they've got more to offer but we're not firing on all cylinders like we've seen under Renee Slegers. Emma Sanders BBC Sport women’s football news reporter Arsenal began the defence of their European title with defeat by giants Lyon in their opening match of the league phase. They lost 3-2 at Bayern Munich in November and scraped through a tough evening at home to Real Madrid to pick up a 2-1 win, keeping their qualification hopes on track. A nervy 1-0 win over FC Twente ensured they would make at least the play-offs, and they eased to a 3-0 win over Leuven on Wednesday to claim fifth place. It has not been a convincing season by any means and Arsenal would have been aiming for automatic qualification to the quarter-finals, but given the dip in form and where they found themselves in November, they have done well. They await Thursday's draw (12: 00 GMT) to find out if they will play Atletico Madrid or Leuven in the play-offs. Should they get through that, they have Chelsea or Bayern Munich waiting in the quarter-finals. Renee Slegers' Gunners side produced the unthinkable last season when they stunned Barcelona to win the title, after managerial upheaval earlier in the campaign, and they will be seeking fresh inspiration to continue their run this time. Leuven 0-3 Arsenal Holders Arsenal had to settle for a place in the Champions League knockout play-offs despite securing an impressive victory over Leuven in Belgium. Arsenal will either face Spanish side Atletico Madrid or have an instant rematch against Leuven, who finished 12th in the league phase. In Belgium, the Gunners were by far the better side and Alessia Russo had seen two headers saved before Smith scored her first Champions League goal in the 18th minute. Olivia Smith played a one-two with Mariona Caldentey and surged into the Leuven penalty area with home goalkeeper Lowiese Seynhaeve saving Smith's first effort, only to then be beaten by her follow-up shot. Beth Mead added a second nine minutes later. She collected a ball from Russo on the right side of the penalty area and cut inside on to her left foot and fired past Seynhaeve. Arsenal's third came in the 67th minute when Sarr Janssen steered Caitlin Foord's low cross into her own net.
