Those concerns filtered through to successive England managers. Gareth Southgate often preferred other defenders at right-back and started Euro 2024 with Alexander-Arnold in a central midfield role, which he quickly rolled back on. Current England boss Thomas Tuchel seemed to harbour similar concerns when asked about the Real Madrid right-back early in his reign. "I can see that sometimes he relies heavily on his offensive contributions and gives not so much emphasis on the defensive discipline and effort, " added Tuchel. "This major impact that he had for Liverpool over so many years…if he wants to have this impact in the English national team then he has to take the defensive part very, very seriously. "Because when we are talking, especially about qualifying football, and then tournament football, the one defensive error, the one moment where you are not 100% awake, can be decisive. It can be the moment where you pack your suitcases and go home. " Since 2024, Trent Alexander-Arnold has only played once for England. Injuries have heavily impacted his first season at Real Madrid, but he is now back up to speed and impressed in both Champions League ties against Man City. Could he be in line for a recall? Sami Mokbel BBC Sport Senior football correspondent on Football Focus Brighton striker Danny Welbeck is set to miss out on the England squad despite his excellent season. Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say Mainoo and Maguire are dependable backups but not starters. Nick, Utd fan Kobbie Mainoo's sharp rise and fall with England is mirrored in his club career with Manchester United. As an 18-year-old, he played 24 times in the Premier League for United in the 2023-24 season under Erik ten Hag. His assured performances in the centre of midfield marked Mainoo as a future England player, and Gareth Southgate duly obliged by giving the Stockport-born midfielder a first call-up in March 2024. But Mainoo failed to kick on following his breakthrough campaign with both United and England. He was never a regular starter for the first team under Ruben Amorim, following the Portuguese manager's appointment as Ten Hag's replacement in November 2024, although Mainoo did play 38 times for United last season. The 20-year-old made just 12 appearances for United under Amorim this season, with his only start coming in their Carabao Cup humiliation at Grimsby. But Michael Carrick immediately reinstated Mainoo to the starting XI, where he has formed an impressive partnership with Casemiro in the heart of United's midfield in nine games under the interim boss. Harry Maguire has started the past nine games for Manchester United, losing just once. The defender has been a key player under interim boss Michael Carrick. The 33-year-old, who was not always first choice under former boss Ruben Amorim, struggled with a thigh injury earlier in the season. Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say Quite right to recall Maguire, his steadiness has been a major factor in Man United's revival. Ken Harry Maguire is probably one of the most underrated centre-backs in history. He could have been the difference that won us the Euros. Look at his goals for Manchester United - always when it matters, Maguire is the saviour. Enzo Alex Howell BBC Sport It's never ideal going into a major tournament without knowing your first-choice centre-back partnership but that is where England are currently. Tuchel has spoken repeatedly about his admiration for Manchester City centre-back John Stones but because of fitness issues, the defender has only been available for four of England's 10 games since he took over. Aston Villa's Konsa started six of England's qualifiers and is certain to be part of the backline. Marc Guehi has missed two international camps under Tuchel through injury, but he was one of the standout players for England at Euro 2024 and then won the FA Cup with Crystal Palace before moving to title-chasing Manchester City. Stones will be included if he is fit - but who Tuchel picks to start from those three leading into the summer will be intriguing. Meanwhile, Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire is making a late charge for the squad as the Red Devils continue their resurgence. Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say Why put Harry Maguire in? He's finished - he should hang up his boots. Peter Harry Maguire deserves his return to the squad and should be a starter, in my opinion. Adam It would be great to see Harry Maguire return to the squad. He's been excellent for England when he's played and has been performing well at club level this season. One of the most underappreciated players out there. I'd love to see him partner Guehi. Ben With Harry Maguire’s history of performing for England on the big stage, is a possible return for the 33-year-old the right call? His last cap came in 2024, but he has quite an England CV: Hit the thumbs to get him back in the mix. This video can not be played World Cup 2018: Sweden 0-2 England highlights Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say I've always thought that Harry Maguire is actually a good defender. He's just been hampered for years by a pretty poor Manchester United squad. He's also been a great servant for England under Gareth Southgate. George Get ready to hear the phrase 'Harry Maguire has never let England down' a lot (he actually has on several occasions, but still deserves a place here). Stephen "He has got all the attributes to be one of the best left-backs in the world, " Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier said of team-mate Lewis Hall.

"I think he is [one of the best] right now. " High praise from Trippier after Newcastle drew their first leg with Barcelona. They got hammered 7-2 in the return leg, but Hall impressed against Lamine Yamal. Sami Mokbel BBC Sport Senior football correspondent Manchester United defender Luke Shaw, who was tipped for a return to the England squad, is set to miss out. Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall is set to return to the squad. Alex Howell BBC Sport During this qualifying campaign, Thomas Tuchel has used Myles Lewis-Skelly, Nico O'Reilly, Reece James, Djed Spence and Tino Livramento as full-backs on the left. O'Reilly has been excellent for both Manchester City and England this season but has now moved into midfield for his club side. Lewis Hall has missed most of the England camps under Tuchel through injury, although he played for the under-21s in November. He is performing well for Newcastle and the games against Uruguay and Japan give Tuchel a last chance to see how he would fit into his 4-2-3-1 system. Left-back is definitely the spot in the England team that is currently the most open. Click 'Get Involved' to have your say What do we think of a possible England return for Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo? Get your thoughts in. Alex Howell BBC Sport Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers impressed in qualifying, starting five of England's eight group games, and has become the first-choice number 10. There is no denying Jude Bellingham is one of the best midfielders in the world when he is fit and in form, but the midfielder is currently working his way back from a hamstring injury and has not played since 1 February. It's easy to forget that Bellingham is just 22, given he has already produced some iconic moments for England such as his last-gasp bicycle kick against Slovakia at Euro 2024 and his assist for Cole Palmer's goal in the final. Tuchel has made a point about how his England team need to be settled and united, but if Bellingham is producing his best for Madrid at the end of the season, the England manager has a very difficult decision on his hands. Chelsea's Cole Palmer, who has also had injury problems this season, has barely played under Tuchel, featuring for just 65 minutes. And Phil Foden's role is not clear in this England squad - he was called up as a back-up striker for the last camp and assisted Eberechi Eze in the win over Serbia at Wembley in November from that position. This video can not be played Who should start as England's No. 10? Jude Bellingham damaged his hamstring against Rayo Vallecano last month but was only expected to miss around four weeks. The 22-year-old, who missed both Champions League ties against Manchester City, is yet to return to action for Real Madrid. Speaking at last month's Nations League draw, England boss Thomas Tuchel said: "Jude is pushing, and as we know him, he is determined and super professional. He will try everything to be with us in March. Of course we are in contact, that is a normal thing to do, and we wish him all the best. "Whatever we can do for him, we will help and support him. It is a little race against time. " Asked whether he believed Bellingham would be fit, Tuchel added: "Personally, I am optimistic, but I am not sure. " Sami Mokbel BBC Sport Senior football correspondent Alex Scott's omission could open the door to Everton midfielder James Garner to make his first appearance in the England squad following his impressive season. The 25-year-old has five assists and two goals this season, having started every game for the Toffees. Garner is on Thomas Tuchel's radar, but it remains to be seen whether he gets the nod for the forthcoming friendlies. Copyright © 2026 BBC.
