Liverpool were dominated in a game which saw them fail to record a shot on target while PSG had 74% of the ball and 18 shots on goal Manager Arne Slot: 'We were in survival mode for large parts of the game but maybe also the period of the season we are in, we are in survival mode' Slot said his side were 'lucky to only lose 2-0' and urged the fans 'to be there for us' in next week's second leg Opta give Liverpool a 15. 34% chance of overturning the tie and reaching the semi-final; while Arsenal remain favourites for the trophy Also: watch highlights from all four quarter finals as Atletico earn a surprising win at Barcelona Written by Craig Nelson, Flora Snelson & Tasnim Chowdhury. Select the 'Get Involved' button to have your say “Survival mode? ” Wow, what an overreaction to being just about OK. Has anyone in Liverpool’s general area worried about relegation? Or being insolvent? There are teams with much smaller egos out there suffering worse and not crying this hard about it. Time for a reality check - things are fine. Pete Everton haven't played in Europe's elite competition since 1970. They haven't played any European football since 2017. But are they battling their biggest rivals Liverpool for that fifth spot in the Champions League? Liverpool currently sit in that special fifth place and remain five and six points behind Aston Villa in fourth and Manchester United in third. But they are far from comfortable. A point separates them and Chelsea in sixth, and another two keep Brentford and the Toffees in the race behind. And Liverpool still have to play all three of them. There is no predicting who will pick up points where at this stage of the season but if the gap remains the same, Everton would draw level with their neighbours next weekend if they secure a victory in the Merseyside derby. Select the 'Get Involved' button to have your say Some of the reaction to Liverpool's season is extreme. We had bad seasons under Klopp too - at this point in our last title defence, we were 7th! ! It's not always a crisis if a team hits poor form, sometimes it's just the ebb and flow of football. David Dale Johnson Football issues correspondent The race for fifth place in the Premier League, currently held by Liverpool on 49 points, is exceptionally tight. Just seven points separate Arne Slot's side from 13th-placed Bournemouth. Chelsea (48) sit in sixth followed by Brentford (46), Everton (46), Fulham (44), Brighton (43), Sunderland (43), Newcastle (42) and Bournemouth (42). If Aston Villa, who are fourth on 54 points, win the Europa League and finish outside the top four, the Premier League would have six teams in the Champions League. The same logic applies to Liverpool, who face Paris St-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals. If either win a European trophy and finish fifth, then sixth would qualify for the Champions League via the EPS place. If both win European trophies and finish fifth and sixth, that would put seventh into the Champions League. Nottingham Forest are in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. They could emulate Tottenham by winning the competition and finishing in the bottom half of the table. Just like last season, that would create a sixth team in the Champions League for the Premier League too. Remember, the Premier League will have at least five teams in the Champions League next season after securing a European Performance Spot for the second straight year. .. Liverpool Here are the games Liverpool have left to play: Today's poll on Arne Slot shows that only 19% have faith in the Liverpool manager, with only 9% believing that things will improve under him. A staggering 43% reckon he should be sacked before the end of the season, while 38% want to wait and reassess in the summer. So patience is wearing thin, can Slot win back supporters with a barnstorming finish to this campaign? Let's see what Liverpool have left to play for. Select the 'Get Involved' button to have your say We can all appreciate the job he did for us last season, but I'm experienced enough to know when a manager has lost the players and he [Arne Slot] 100% has. There's no way back from that. End of the season or now makes no odds. Adam Probably the worst performance I’ve seen since the final Hodgson games. There was no press or passing, the players backed off the PSG team, giving them time to pass the ball around with ease. Slot did well with Klopp’s team but he’s unpicked a winning team & made them worse. Martyn PSG 2-0 Liverpool Here's are some of the highlights from social media's response to last night's game: Jamie Carragher was as outspoken on the TV as many pundits and fans were on social media, where there was an outpouring of emotion - as ever - after Liverpool's chastening defeat and performance. .. PSG 2-0 Liverpool While Liverpool's back five have attracted most of the criticism for Liverpool's defeat at PSG, it wasn't all sunshine and flowers at the other end of the pitch, either. In fact, the Reds' defence might have an easier time of it if their top scorer, Hugo Ekitike, had held up the ball to soak up a bit of the pressure. Full of tricks and pretty touches, Ekitike couldn't get the simple things right, losing possession a whopping 13 times to subject his besieged team-mates to yet another wave of PSG attack. With 59%, he completed fewer of his passes than any outfield player, and he managed just one touch in the opposition penalty area, although he was often left isolated. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was not impressed by his efforts. "Ekitike was really poor tonight, " he told CBS. "To be a top player for Liverpool as an attacking player - and I include Wirtz and Isak in this - you have to be arrogant on the ball, but humble off the ball. They're not humble off the ball. "They don't do enough off the ball. And that's why it's so easy to play against Liverpool right now. " What do you think? Was Ekitike that bad, or is he just the latest scapegoat for Liverpool's problems? Select the 'Get Involved' button to have your say Liverpool have had a tough season for many many reasons but remember, they were battered by PSG in Paris last year but because they got a lucky goal and cruised to the title there wasn’t so much fuss. A small but telling metric: prime players age 25-30. Liverpool have four staters in that category. Arsenal 8, City 8. We desperately lack pacy wingers, so no outlet. Not good enough, but would changing manager change that? Jack PSG 2-0 Liverpool Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool this summer with a surplus of records to his name, but one thing he has fallen short at is scoring in knockout football. The winger has scored 50 Champions League goals across his time at Liverpool, Roma and Basel, but just 13 of those have come after the group/league stage of the competition. Of course, how many goals he can score depends on how far his team gets, but there is a case to be made that Liverpool could have had more European success during his time at the club if he had been able to net tie-winning goals. Saying that, a goal against Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano in 2019 does stand out. .. Dropped last night and not even brought up. But what do you think - should Arne Slot be using more of Mohamed Salah or is he making the right call on the Egyptian? This Riddle post cannot be displayed in your browser. PSG 2-0 Liverpool Mohamed Salah announced he would be leaving Liverpool in the upcoming summer, after nearly a decade in Merseyside, and the farewell tour isn't going as well as he would have hoped. A disappointing season for the club on the pitch has been further punctured by drama off it, including the star player's public fallout with manager Arne Slot. Whether in response to Salah's 'disgraceful' comments about being thrown under the bus, or due to the winger's dramatic drop in form this campaign, the Dutch coach has dropped Salah to the bench eight times now this season and has even been forced to leave him out of squads altogether. However, despite all of this, the 33-year-old has still managed to bag yet another record as he became the first African player to score 50 Champions League goals when he netted against Galatasaray in the Round of 16 last month. Still, Slot's decision to keep him in the reserves against PSG can perhaps be justified. This season, the Egyptian has returned his lowest turnover of goals and assists in European football (five) since he played in Roma colours in 2016-17. Alongside his worst domestic season for the Reds, Slot was left with a decision to make. PSG 2-0 Liverpool Mohamed Salah remained an unused sub against PSG last night, as Arne Slot demoted him to the bench for the eighth time this season. On not turning to his star winger throughout the game, Slot said: "In the last part of the game, it was more about surviving than us having a chance to score. "You never know, as last season we scored five minutes before the end through Harvey Elliott when I took Mo off. We had 20-25 minutes defending in the box, I think it’s better to save his energy for the games coming up in the coming weeks. " Julien Laurens wonders what Liverpool could change before the second leg of this tie next Tuesday. Well they could fight fire with fire, couldn't they? The club's record signing - Sweden striker Alexander Isak - made a return from injury as a late substitute at Paris St-Germain. He was bought from Newcastle for his goals. ..
