Man Utd lose to Brann in first leg of third qualifying round Stenevik's header gave Norwegian side victory after United missed number of chances Return leg on 18 September at Leigh Sports Village Winner of two-legged tie will reach inaugural league phase of Women's Champions League Comment at the top of this page, Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) Ciara Fleming Brann 0-0 Man Utd Lisa Naalsund has been excellent in midfield for the visitors. Whenever Brann have tried to run at the United back four she's been there to shield them. That said she's just become the first player to go into the book for a cynical trip. Brann 0-0 Man Utd United head coach Marc Skinner replies with two changes of his own. On: Celine Bizet and Millie Turner Off: Jess Park and Anna Sandberg Brann 0-0 Man Utd Brann boss Leif Smerud turns to his bench again to bring on Brenna Lovera in place of Cassandra Bogere. Brann 0-0 Man Utd Brave goalkeeping from Phallon Tullis-Joyce to claim a cross under presssure. It was a looping delivery from Nea Lehtola, aided by a deflection, but the USA international had steady hands. Brann 0-0 Man Utd 20 minutes to go and still no breakthrough. Brann 0-0 Man Utd Tonight's attendance of 16, 019 at Brann Stadion in Bergen has broken a record that stood for almost 25 years. The previous highest attendance for a women's game in Norway was 15, 762 fans set on 30 July 2000 when Norway women's national team beat USA at Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo. Incredible for a Champions League third round qualifier. Brann 0-0 Man Utd Ella Toone has started this season in sparkling form. That's another great ball to pick out Melvine Malard on the left but Ingrid Stenevik did just enough to stop the attack progressing any further. Brann 0-0 Man Utd Melvine Malard does well to get her head to a cross at the far post but it's straight into the arms of Selma Panengstuen. Brann 0-0 Man Utd A very enthusiastic announcement from the stadium PA has just confirmed that tonight's fixture in Bergen has set a new record for a women's football match in Norway. 16, 019 fans have turned out to watch tonight. Another record set for the women's game. Brann 0-0 Man Utd Looking at the United bench they are a bit thin depth-wise aren't they? There's Celine Bizet, who had an outstanding debut campaign for the side last year, but injuries to Leah Galton, Rachel Williams and new arrival Fridolina Rolfo have left them with little else in reserve. Brann 0-0 Man Utd What's the opposite of 'curse of the commentator'? Dominique Janssen charges forward from the back for United, exchanging passes on the edge of the box before firing at goal. Selma Panengstuen deals with it initially but then spills it into the path of Jess Park and has to bounce up to smother the rebound. Brann 0-0 Man Utd Plenty of possession for United but very little cutting edge. Brann 0-0 Man Utd Melvine Malard pops up on the right and tries to combine with Ella Toone who has also drifted over to that side of the pitch, but Nea Lehtola does well to cut it out. Brann 0-0 Man Utd While it didn't go to plan that time that is an area where Brann can get at United. As the visitors push their defensive line high to squeeze the pitch and win the ball back, there are acres of space left free behind them. It would only really take one quality through ball for Brann to get in. Brann 0-0 Man Utd Lauren Davidson is set in behind by a smart reverse pass from Signe Gaupset and has a free run at goal. She has options to her left but panics under pressure and slices a shot well wide of Phallon Tullis-Joyce's goal. Brann 0-0 Man Utd United pass from left to right and back again but Brann are being diligent in their defensive shape. In the end Anna Sandberg sends a speculative cross towards Elisabeth Terland but the striker can't sort her feet out and Joanna Tynnila blasts it up and away. Brann 0-0 Man Utd A lightning quick start from United results in Melvine Malard having a snapshot from the corner of the box which is deflected behind. The French forward tries an ambitious front post flick at the corner but can't connect and Brann mop up easily enough. Brann 0-0 Man Utd The ball is back rolling in Bergen. HT: Brann 0-0 Man Utd Monica Isaksen is coming on for the hosts at half time as they shuffle their pack. Diljá Zomers will be the player to make way. HT: Brann 0-0 Man Utd Hosts Brann had just one attempt on target in that first half, which came from Norway international Signe Gaupset. United would do well to keep an eye on her though, she scored two sensational goals on her Euros debut against Iceland in the summer. This video can not be played 'On fire' Gaupset scores superb double for Norway SK Brann reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2023/24 At a glance Manchester United frustrated by Brann goalkeeper Selma Panengstuen after dominating first leg of qualifier Ingrid Stenevik heads 76th-minute winner against the run of play Second leg at Leigh Sports Village on 18 September, with winner progressing to Champions League main draw Manchester United will have to come from behind to reach the main draw of the Women's Champions League after being upset by SK Brann in the first leg of their third qualifying round tie in Bergen. Marc Skinner's side dominated the match for 75 minutes in front of 16, 019 fans - a record crowd for a women's match in Norway - with Ella Toone, former Brann forward Elisabeth Terland, and Melvine Malard all going close. However, they were frustrated by a strong performance from goalkeeper Selma Panengstuen, before defender Ingrid Stenevik headed in a 76th-minute winner. It gave the hosts the advantage heading into the second leg at Leigh Sports Village on 18 September. The winner of the tie will advance to the league stage of the Women's Champions League, while the loser will drop into the second qualifying round of the inaugural Women's Europa Cup. With several chances wasted, it seemed as if United didn't have their shooting boots on. And that was actually the case for some as news outlet Reuters reported players' boots had gone missing in transit on the journey to Bergen. Replacements were secured for those affected before kick-off, but United could have been out of sight inside the opening 45 minutes. Toone had two shots smartly saved by Panengstuen, while Norwegian Terland twice headed off target either side of having a shot from distance deflected wide by Stenevik. Panengstuen produced a sharp double save on the hour mark to further frustrate the visitors. First she got down well to deny Dominique Janssen and reacted well as United looked to pounce on the rebound. Panengstuen then kept out French forward Malard's header. Brann hadn't threatened Phallon Tullis-Joyce's goal until Stenevik found space in the box to nod in Signe Gaupset's free-kick. United rallied, but the impressive Panengstuen produced another fine diving stop to deny Toone. United will return to England wondering how they're behind in this encounter. This was a largely one-sided affair in Bergen, with the visitors dominating possession and raining efforts on Panengstuen's goal. But the Norway international stood up to every challenge, with her late fingertip stop to deny Toone the pick of her saves. And where United lacked that clinical touch in attack, Brann capitalised on slack marking at a set-piece to take their only clear-cut chance. Trailing by just the one goal and the home return to follow, there's little need for United to panic and boss Skinner will take positives. His side were a constant threat going forward, with Malard lively down the left wing and enjoying several smart link-ups with Toone. Jess Park, making her first start for the club following her deadline day switch from Manchester City, was also a handful on the opposite flank, showing confidence in possession and making a couple of dangerous runs into the box. One area of concern, however, is United's squad depth. They named only five players on the bench in Sunday's 4-0 Women's Super League win over Leicester and, while they mustered seven against Brann, that included three outfielders aged 18 or under and two goalkeepers. Skinner is hoping Gabby George and new signing Fridolina Rolfo will be available for Sunday's trip to London City Lionesses. But with this Brann loss the first of four matches in 11 days, United will need all their options, and quality, during a challenging period.
